Why We Love Villas

“Please,” said the general manager. “We ask all guests staying in the penthouse to sign the guest book.”
“Of course,” I said, accepting his Montblanc pen with feigned nonchalance — as if I did this every day.
The year is 2002. My wife and I and two young daughters are in Italy, checking into one of Rome’s most famous hotels. We’re here because my wife did some work for the hotel, and as a thank you, the GM invited our family to spend two nights in the penthouse suite.
He points to the place in the guest book where I should sign. I notice two prior guest names on the page.
The first name is Mikhail Gorbachev. The second name is Bruce Springsteen. I glance over at my wife, whose eyes are even wider than mine. And then, thinking of The Boss, I sign:
“The Partridge Family.”
The Best Room in the House

What I remember about the penthouse is that, besides two bedrooms, there was a private library, a sitting room, and a jacuzzi so big, my kids adopted it as a swimming pool. And that was the second bathroom (the master bathroom was larger).
Access to luxury of this nature commonly entails substantial investment.
The Mark Hotel Penthouse in New York is $75,000 per night. The Presidential Suite at the Harbour House in Hong Kong costs $64,000/night. In London, the tab for the rooftop Penthouse at Claridge’s is $81,000/night.
Why does a penthouse command such high prices? What does it offer that a standard hotel room doesn’t?
Multiple rooms and more overall square footage, certainly. Plus designer furniture, rich décor, and luxury amenities. And perhaps most importantly, privacy and exclusivity. You’re segregated from the main hotel guests; there’s a private entrance and sometimes a private elevator. As for exclusivity, there’s usually only one penthouse or presidential suite in a hotel, and if you have it, you’re the Grand Panjandrum.
That penthouse experience opened my eyes to what true luxury travel could be: privacy, space, and personalized attention. But at $50,000+ per night, penthouse suites aren’t practical for most mere mortals.
Fortunately, there’s another way to capture that same exclusive experience without the eye-watering price tag.
It was my father-in-law who showed me the light, suggesting a milestone birthday vacation in Italy.
Why Choose Villa Life for Your Special Celebration?
After experiencing both penthouse and villa stays, I’ve discovered that villas offer something even better than hotel luxury – they offer a private paradise designed around your special event.
Creating Unforgettable Celebrations

Whether it’s a milestone birthday, family reunion, or girlfriends’ getaway, villas provide the perfect setting for life’s special moments. Unlike a few hours in a restaurant or hotel banquet room, villa celebrations can unfold naturally over days:
- Family Reunions: Space for everyone to gather, plus private retreats when needed
- Milestone Celebrations: Multi-day festivities where connections deepen naturally
- Intimate Weddings: Exchange vows on your private terrace, celebrate without time constraints
- Girlfriend Getaways/Friends’ Getaways: Reconnect deeply without public space restrictions
To make these celebrations truly special, every villa offers three essential elements:
Space, Privacy & Luxury – Your Private Resort
Picture this: an entire property all to yourself, with indoor and outdoor spaces that dwarf even the most lavish hotel suites. Your family might start the day with a dip in your private infinity pool, enjoy afternoon siestas in separate wings, and gather for sunset cocktails on the terrace – all without seeing another soul.
But having space is just the beginning. What transforms a beautiful property into an unforgettable experience is what happens within those spaces.
Personalized Service & Experiences
Unlike hotels where staff juggle hundreds of guests, the best villa stays include a dedicated concierge focused solely on your family. Your local expert anticipates needs and crafts experiences tailored to your group. Want a family cooking class with a local chef? Thinking about a sunset cruise? Looking for a babysitter so adults can enjoy a sunset dinner? Your concierge makes it happen.
Location & Flexibility - The Ultimate Freedom
Villas often occupy the most coveted real estate – private coves, hillside perches with panoramic views, or historic properties in medieval villages. These exceptional locations offer experiences impossible to replicate in hotels: waking up to waves beneath your window, enjoying sunset views from your infinity pool, or stepping from your garden into ancient olive groves.
Can’t decide between privacy and resort amenities? Resort villas offer both. Enjoy breakfast in your villa, then stroll to the resort’s beach club or spa. Perfect for multi-generational groups where different family members have varying needs.
Authentic Local Living

Imagine two different Italian vacations:
The typical tourist rushes through crowded museums, fights for seats by the pool, and dines at 6 PM because that’s when a table is available. Their “local” experience is limited to what their guidebook recommends.
Now picture your villa experience: Your morning starts with coffee at the neighborhood café where Giorgio, the owner, already knows how you like your cappuccino. Later, your villa manager introduces you to Maria, who invites your family to her olive grove to learn traditional pressing methods. That evening, instead of a tourist-filled restaurant, a local chef prepares a feast in your villa kitchen, sharing stories and recipes passed down through generations.
While tourists check TripAdvisor for restaurant recommendations, you’re getting personal suggestions from your dedicated concierge. While they’re booking impersonal wine tours, you’re sharing a glass with your neighbor who makes his own Chianti. While they’re following guides with red umbrellas, you’re discovering hidden town squares and local festivals that most visitors never see.
This is the difference between visiting a destination and truly living it – even if just for a week.
Making Villa Life Affordable
When comparing costs with luxury hotels, villas offer surprising value. Consider these examples:
- A family Disney trip: $3,000-4,800/night for six hotel rooms vs. $1,612/night for a 9-bedroom luxury villa.
- Tuscany reunion: $4,000/night for eight hotel rooms vs. $1,584/night for a 15th Century villa (pictured below) with eight bedrooms, plus lush gardens, private swimming pool, and jacuzzi.
Smart strategies for maximizing value:
- Book during shoulder season (families save 30-60%)
- Split costs among family members
- Take advantage of longer-stay discounts
- Enjoy included amenities instead of paying exorbitant resort activity fees
Real Example: Recently, my family took a multi-generational trip to Greece, including the island of Paros. Late September is considered the shoulder season, even though the weather is delightful (sunny in the mid 80’s). We could still enjoy the ocean, hike, sunbathe, eat outdoors, etc.
It was a gorgeous villa in a great location on the quiet, less-windy side of the island. The villa included an infinity pool, gym, outdoor theater, gourmet kitchen, fire pit, two-person staff, and private chef. By renting in September, the villa cost was 1/3 the price of peak summer season. We allocated some of the savings to fun activities like renting a boat that made the trip truly memorable.
Working with a Specialist

While the villa life is undeniably alluring, it’s important to do your homework to ensure your experience lives up to the dream. You don’t want to arrive at your villa to find the property looks starkly different from the photos online.
Using an experienced villa specialist is key. Travel Villa Guide exists to prevent these surprises. True peace of mind comes when you have someone who knows the area, knows the villa, and has local onsite experts who can verify the property and ensure everything meets your expectations — not only when you arrive but every day of your stay.
Finding the perfect villa requires local expertise. Our team:
- Personally verifies each property matches online descriptions
- Provides on-the-ground support throughout your stay
- Connects you with trusted local services
- Handles the details so you can focus on celebrating
