TL;DR
What worked on this trip:
- Finally made it to Nova Scotia after 20 years of dreaming.
- Amazing nature and scenery.
- Great eats, fresh seafood.
- The laid back, friendly vibes Canadians are famous for.
- Cabot Trail alone is worth the trip.
- Memorable boat trip with grizzled sea captain.
What didn’t work:
- Rental house was underwhelming.
- Hiking trails were closed due to wildfires.
- Didn’t have a concierge to help with planning.
You know those dreamy social media posts about perfect family vacations? The ones where three generations lounge on pristine beaches, everyone’s laughing, and the sunsets are always golden?
Yeah, that’s not how it usually goes.
After 25+ years of planning luxury villa vacations with dedicated concierges – local experts who handle everything from airport pickups to private chefs to creating those special moments that make a trip unforgettable – you’d think I’d know better. But when our family picked Nova Scotia for our reunion, I had a problem: TravelVilla Guide doesn’t offer properties there yet. So I did what I tell clients never to do. I went the DIY route on Airbnb.
The result? A family reunion in Nova Scotia that was… let’s say, “educational.”
You see, when you book an unvetted property online, you’re not just taking a chance on your own comfort; you’re essentially running an experiment with your whole family’s vacation. And like most experiments, this one came with some unexpected results.

Don’t get me wrong, we had some incredible moments. Like the night we held an impromptu mussel shell-throwing competition off a cliff, with contestants from their 20s to their 70s trying different techniques: baseball throws, discus spins, cricket bowls, and my personal favorite: the hell-bent-with-running-start method that ended with more than one person face-planting in the grass. Total giggle fest.

These unplanned moments of joy happened despite my planning mistakes, not because of them. Here are five hard-learned lessons for anyone planning a family reunion, whether you have access to vetted villas or not:
1. The “It’s Such a Deal!” Trap
When I spotted a waterfront property in Cape Breton at what seemed like a bargain price, I should have remembered my own mantra: you get what you pay for. The homes I’d initially dismissed as “too expensive” were actually market rate for luxury properties in the area. Because I didn’t know the region, I didn’t realize that my “deal” meant settling for dated furniture, burnt-out lightbulbs, and magazines from 2009 in the bathroom.
2. The “We’ll Make It Work” Bedroom Situation
You know that moment when everyone’s trying to find something nice to say? Like when someone gets a terrible haircut and all anyone can muster is “Oh, that’ll be nice and cool for the summer”? That was me watching family members tour their rooms.
Pro tip: When you catch yourself saying “we can make it work” about sleeping arrangements, you’re already in trouble.
3. The Last-Minute Scramble
Starting our search late meant most of the best properties were already booked. It’s like showing up to a buffet an hour before closing. Sure, there’s still food, but it’s not the prime selection. The lesson? Premium properties in prime locations often book 12-18 months ahead for peak season.

4. The Perfect Property Mirage
It’s so easy to fall for those dreamy DIY rental listings. The photos are always perfect – sunlight streaming through spotless windows, pristine furniture artfully arranged, views that belong in a magazine. Yes, there are certainly times when the reality does match the imagery. But perhaps too often, it’s a carefully created illusion, not unlike those suspect Instagram posts.
You see, anyone can list a property on these sites. No standards. No inspections. No verification. Which is how you end up with “luxury” bathrooms stocked with magazines from 2009, windows that won’t open, and furniture that’s seen better decades. And when these issues pop up, you’re stuck trying to reach a host who might be in another time zone or slow to respond.
5. Playing Rating Roulette
The property had a 9.6 rating online. Sounds amazing, right? What I missed: it was based on just a handful of reviews. It’s like judging a restaurant based on two happy Yelp reviewers who might be the owner’s cousins.
This blind trust in online ratings led to even more questionable decisions – like booking a boat excursion with a fishing captain we found through random internet searches. When we arrived at the dock, my stomach dropped. The boat looked like it had just returned from a week-long commercial fishing trip – debris and equipment scattered everywhere – and the ragtag captain looked like he’d just been spit out by Moby Dick.
To add to the confusion, the captain’s wife was hurriedly pulling lawn chairs from her car trunk, having “forgotten” how many people were coming aboard (despite 25 emails confirming the details). As my family exchanged worried glances, I could practically hear them thinking: “Have they ever done this before?” and “Is this boat even seaworthy?”

A Fishing Tale with a Plot Twist
Plot twist: That boat trip turned out to be one of the trip’s highlights. Captain Steve and his first mate Alan (or was it Ahab?) were walking encyclopedias of local lore, found us a spot where mackerel practically jumped into the boat, and showed us views you can’t get any other way. But it could just as easily have gone sideways.
Just like those misleading property reviews, our initial impression of Captain Steve’s operation wasn’t the full story. We got lucky. But when you’re planning a family reunion, “getting lucky” isn’t exactly a solid strategy.

Planning vs. Hoping
Those picture-perfect social media posts might make DIY planning look easy, but reality hits different when you’re the one responsible for three generations’ worth of vacation memories. Sure, our mussel-throwing Olympics and adventures with Captain Steve turned out great – but next time, I’ll stick to what I know: vetted properties, dedicated concierges, and the peace of mind that comes with professional planning.
After all, the best family memories should come from enjoying time together, not from starring in your own travel cautionary tale. There’s a reason we started TravelVilla Guide. And this trip reminded me exactly why.
Still, even my planning missteps couldn’t dim Nova Scotia’s brilliance. Here’s why this maritime province captures hearts, planned perfectly or not:

Why Nova Scotia?
Despite my planning missteps, Nova Scotia’s raw beauty and authentic charm shine through. This maritime province captivates visitors with its dramatic coastline, where lighthouse-dotted cliffs plunge into the Atlantic. Fishing villages that look plucked from a postcard dot the shore, their weathered docks and colorful boats telling stories of generations at sea.
Best for:
- Outdoor nature lovers and adventurers (hiking, whale watching, kayaking, rafting, biking, fishing)
- Lobster and mussel lovers (washed down with good craft beer)
- Connoisseurs of slow travel (it feels like time moves more slowly here)
- Road trippers (Cabot Trail is one of the best drives in North America)
- Golfers (we enjoyed Le Portage Golf Club in Chéticamp. Cabot Cliffs/Links and Cape Breton Highlands are world-class)
- Families (museums, wildlife parks, and safe, uncrowded beaches abound)

Here, maritime culture isn’t a tourist show – it’s daily life. Fishermen mend their nets as they’ve done for centuries, lobster traps stack the wharves, and the day’s catch becomes tonight’s dinner.

Even the most photographed spot in Nova Scotia – Peggy’s Cove – retains its working-village soul. Yes, tourists flock to capture its iconic lighthouse perched on wave-worn granite. But visit at sunrise, when lobster boats head out and sea mist wraps the shore, and you’ll understand why this place has drawn photographers and dreamers for generations.

Sure, our accommodation had its quirks. But the surrounding beauty – those rugged headlands, hidden coves, and endless ocean vistas – reminded us why we chose Nova Scotia in the first place.
